When investing in a new heating system, you want to know it’s built to last. How long will a new IR Panel last you in real world terms?

How Long?

Our IR panels have expected lifespans of around 100,000 hours. To put that in practical terms, you could run this panel for 24 hours a day, 365 days in a year and you’d get about 11 years of use out of it!

Obviously, that wouldn’t be a great way to use your heater- for reasons we’ll get into shortly, but it is amazing to know just how durable your new panel is!

Let’s take the more reasonable number of 4 hours a day- that’s about as long as our average customer would ever use their panel for. That would ensure your panel has a theoretical lifespan of about 70 years!

Compare this to the average boiler, which will typically last for around 15 years, perhaps 20 if it’s very well looked after.

What makes IR panels so different?

Why Is This?

Infrared panels don’t contain any moving parts. Simply put, that means they’re under way less strain.

Look at your traditional convection boiler system. There are so many different steps between the boiler turning on and you feeling the heat, with loads of complicated mechanical parts involved in that process. That’s before you get into the difficulties of water-based systems, like freezing pipes.

With an IR Panel, you don’t have to stress about any of that. They’re constructed in such a way that they just radiate gentle heat, no movement required. Movement and the resulting friction build up is one of the biggest ways any mechanical hardware fails, so by removing this factor, you massively increase the durability of a product.

During its lifespan, an IR panel will require precisely zero specialist maintenance. They don’t need servicing like a boiler does, which can save you an absolute fortune over that long lifespan! To look after your panel, all you’ll need to do is occasionally wipe it down with a clean cloth.

Plus, once they reach the end of their lifespans, you can recycle an LED panel relatively simply, as ours are constructed out of aluminium for extra simplicity.

Pushing It Further

If you want to make every hour of that lifespan really count, then there are a few tips and tricks that can really help extend your heaters performance and lifespan.

1) remember that an IR Panel uses radiant heat, which means it works at its best when you’re next to it. They heat you, not the air around you, so there’s little point leaving your panel running when you’re not with it.

2) Our classic panels need to be turned on and off manually, but our NXTGEN panels or our Nexus WIFI panels can automatically adjust themselves as needed, turning themselves on and off as they reach their target temperatures.

3) Human error is the biggest reason panels get left on longer than they should be, with people simply forgetting to turn them off when they’re done using them. Again, our remote-controlled ranges can help with this, particularly the Nexus panels, as they can be paired with an app on your phone and turned off no matter where in the world you are!
